My Single Mom just had a stroke, Now What?

Happy smiling woman with curly hair lounging on couch.

Siblings who don’t agree.

My (single) mom had a stroke. Before that she was living independently and doing her own thing. Now she needed full time care and assistance with all her activities of daily living. My sibling was convinced with time and hard work she would recover. She was discharged from the hospital and then from rehab bed bound needing 24 hour care. My sibling wanted her to stay at home and use her funds for physical and occupational therapy. She had limited assets and I wanted to make sure she would be able to use her funds to make sure she had the best chance for good care throughout her lifespan.

I consulted with Tova Jussim. We were able to make short and long term plans respecting my siblings wishes and making sure my mom was well cared for. She encouraged us to seek legal help to make sure Mom’s money was used for her personal care. Initially she went to an Assisted Living with extra support and then a Long term care facility with a supplemental private aid. She participated came in person to help Mom settle in and meet the long term care team, then she made sure to particiapte in care plan meetings and was available at all hours of the day to help with mom’s physical, emotional and spiritual health. She was able to help us over a 5 year span throughout my mothers life, focusing on helping us to advocate for mom, partner as siblings to give her what she needed financially and emotionally, have a truly meaningful quality of life and ensured her comfort throughout her lifespan. Whenever I think about my mom’s story, I think about how helpful Tova was in making sure she was well cared for. We did it, we were able to make her assets outlast her needs and she was able to get the specialized personal care she needed. We needed a navigator, and Tova was there for us.—E.B.
